KOMY PhoneThe children’s phone that thinks along, plays along and grows along.
A child’s first phone – without open internet, without WhatsApp, without an app store. Your child switches on the KOMY Phone, and Komy is there: a friend who listens, marvels along and needs help rather often. For children aged about 5 to 12.
Good to know: Komy speaks German. His voice, the stories, the encyclopedia, the learning games and the parents’ app are in German – made for children who go to school in Germany or Austria. This page is here so you can decide in your language.
The KOMY Phone arrives fully set up. The app for you is also called KOMY Phone and is free on Google Play (Android). For iPhone there is an interim solution.
In short: a children’s phone. And a friend.
The KOMY Phone is a children’s phone for children aged about 5 to 12 that manages without open internet, without an app store and without messengers. Inside the phone lives Komy, a friend who listens, marvels along and needs your child’s help – not a tutor, not an answer machine. Plus a whole children’s encyclopedia that works offline. You send your child short messages that Komy tells them, see that they have arrived safely – and not what they tell Komy. When your child outgrows it, you release the device and it becomes a normal smartphone.
Who is it for?
For children aged about 5 to 12 – from the first day of school into the first years of secondary school. For families who want a first phone that keeps a child reachable without opening the door to WhatsApp, YouTube and TikTok. And for children who could use a friend for growing up.

There is nothing to filter.
Other children’s phones are full smartphones that are filtered with software and a monthly fee. The KOMY Phone lacks what would need filtering: no browser, no app store, no social media, no messengers. A real smartphone, prepared and locked down by us before it reaches you – unpack, connect, done.
What it can’t do
- No open internet, no browser, no app store
- No social media, no ads, no purchases
- No strangers – nobody reaches your child but you
- No calls and no messenger – only short messages from you, the SOS button and Sprechfunk (walkie-talkie)
- No AI chatbot – no language model runs on the phone
- No camera for the child, no image recognition
- No breaking out – not by restarting or through the settings either
What it can do
- Messages from Mum and Dad
“Come home” or “I’m on my way” – you tap in the parents’ app, Komy tells your child, and you see that it has arrived. “Where are you?” quietly fetches the location; your child hears nothing of it. No chat, no history.
- SOS button
One tap opens the question “Brauchst du Hilfe?” (do you need help?); only “Mama und Papa rufen” (call Mum and Dad) sends the alarm. You are told at once, with the location if the phone knows it right then – even when the parents’ app is closed. Without a network the SOS goes out as soon as there is one again. After that your child can send you one short voice message, and you can answer once – 15 seconds at most each, deleted after listening. And Komy stays with the child: “Mum and Dad know. I’m staying with you.”
- Safe places
Home, school, Grandma’s – you learn when your child arrives or leaves. In the parents’ app you pick the school from a bundled list of more than 31,000 schools, with no connection needed; addresses are found through the map search as well. The parents’ app shows the current place, not a trail of the day.
- School mode, alarm clock, timetable
During lessons the phone goes quiet by itself – the timetable knows when. Komy wakes your child in the morning. You simply photograph the timetable.
- Knocking
Your child taps “Mama Bescheid sagen” (tell Mum), you get a notice and answer with a single tap – “I’ll be in touch shortly” or “Not now”. No text, no recording.
- Everything important works offline
The encyclopedia, 100 stories, 21 learning games, Komy’s voice, timetable, alarm clock and the torch for the way home are stored on the phone – on the train, in the basement, on holiday.

The parents’ app scans the code on the child’s phone – the devices know each other, nobody else does
The Komy code: four pictures in the right order instead of a PIN a child picks up by watching
Included and already inserted – or you use your own data SIM
For iPhone
The parents’ app is currently available for Android. That is our main platform; all features are there. For parents with an iPhone there is an interim solution today, and a second one is planned:
- Setup directly on the KOMY Phone – works today. In parent mode, protected by your Komy code, you set the name, reading level, Wi-Fi, timetable and the encyclopedia topics. Your child picks Komy and sets the alarm clock themselves.
- Parents’ page in the browser – planned. For what matters on the go: location and safe places, messages and chores. It is planned but not yet in the works; we will let you know once it exists.
Until then, location, messages, chores and the SOS alert only arrive on an Android device, and the KOMY Phone can only be released from the parents’ app as well. If someone in the family has an Android phone or tablet, you can pair it as the parent device. A dedicated iPhone app is planned, with no date yet.
The child’s phone talks only to a few fixed services – the KOMY service, Google Firebase for your family and a weather service – instead of the open internet. If the phone is lost, you lock it from the parents’ app; Komy’s memory stays backed up, encrypted, on your phone – restoring it onto a new KOMY Phone is something we are still building. The parents’ app is free on Google Play. How setup works is shown in the user manual (German).
New
Sprechfunk: like a walkie-talkie.
A children’s phone without a number – and you can still talk to each other. Hold the button, speak, let go: the message flies across and plays by itself at the other end. Then it is the other one’s turn. No open microphone, no phone call, no number.
- Hold and speak
- Let go – off it goes
- The other one listens – and is up next
- Encrypted
Every voice message is locked with your family’s key. The cloud only carries it – nobody there can listen to it.
- Nothing stored
Heard, deleted. After 15 minutes at the latest every message is gone from the cloud as well.
- Microphone only while the button is held
The KOMY Phone’s microphone only turns on once your child taps “Annehmen” (accept) – and only while they hold the button.
- Only the family
Only the family’s parent phones can ring. It does not ring during lessons or at night – except as an answer to an SOS.
Knocking: “Mum, get in touch”
Not every little thing needs a conversation. On their phone your child taps the button ‘Let Grandma know’ – it carries the names you picked – and Komy confirms: ‘I let them know.’ On your phone it reads ‘Lina would like to talk to you’: no text, no reason, no recording.
You answer with a single tap: ‘I will get back to you’ or ‘Not now’ – or you start a walkie-talkie call right away. Komy passes the answer on to your child by name: ‘Grandma will get back to you shortly.’ The first answer counts; on the other parents’ phones the notice disappears.
A child who knows they are allowed to speak up does not have to try things in secret. Knocking is the quiet way, the walkie-talkie the second step – you decide whether and when to call back. You switch it on or off per child, and it is off to begin with; once on, one to five times a day are possible, three by default, with ten minutes between two knocks. During lessons and at night the button rests, and Komy says so kindly; the SOS button always works. With no signal the phone says honestly that the knock will go out as soon as there is a connection again, and you then see when it was sent. Nothing is left lying around: as soon as someone answers it is gone at once, after a day at the latest.
Sprechfunk and knocking come with every KOMY Phone. You set both per child: knocking is off to begin with, until you switch it on; Sprechfunk starts on “Only as a reply” – after a knock or an SOS – and can be set to “Any time” or “Off”. On top of that you reach your child as usual with the short messages (“Come home”, “I’m on my way”) and see with “Where are you?” where they are right now; your child reaches you through the SOS button.
“Is my child even allowed to take it to school?”
That is the question that comes before all the others – and more and more German states ban phones at school. With the KOMY Phone it is easy to answer: During lessons there is hardly anything you can do with it.
Cannot do during lessons
- Ring or disturb – school mode turns the phone quiet by itself during lesson time and shows only the clock, the current lesson and Komy, who is waiting
- Play, listen to stories or read aloud – that pauses and cannot be opened
- Take photos, write or surf the web – no camera, no messenger, no browser, not in the break either
Only the children’s encyclopedia, My Plan and the SOS button to you stay open. For the conversation with the school there is a printable sheet (in German) – one page a teacher has read in a minute.
What your child says belongs to your child.
A microphone in a child’s room is a matter of trust. That is why privacy on the KOMY Phone is not a setting but the way it is built – and we say exactly what is stored where.
What your child does with Komy stays on the phone
The memory book from reading aloud, the Magic Sky, the game progress: encrypted on the child’s phone, only there. There is no cloud account for your child. The only copy is an encrypted backup on your own parent phone.
The voice stays with your child
When Komy listens, the phone recognises single words from a fixed list – on the device, discarded at once. No recording, no file, no upload. Your child’s voice is not raw material. It only leaves when your child records a walkie-talkie or SOS message to you itself – sealed with your family’s key, deleted after listening.
What leaves the phone – and to whom
The location goes to your parents’ app, via Google Firebase. If Komy does not know a first name or a school subject yet, the phone sends exactly that one word to our own server; a speech service voices it once, and after that the recording stays on the phone. The weather is requested with the place you chose – never with the child’s position. If you have set Komy time, it also reports how many minutes of it have been used today: one number, no history. If you have set a reading time, it reports one word for today: open, started or done.
Joy instead of logs, no contract
You see what is going well and that your child is safe: chore done, reading time happened today, arrived at school. What your child tells Komy, you don’t see. And there is no minimum term: the service can be cancelled monthly.
| What | To whom | When |
|---|---|---|
| The child’s location | your parents’ app, via Google Firebase (EU region) | at once at safe places, on SOS, on “Where are you?” and every minute while you have the live map open; otherwise about every two hours over the data SIM |
| A single word Komy does not know yet: a first name or a school subject | our own KOMY server; only this word goes to a speech service to be voiced | once per word; school subjects on Wi-Fi, a name over the data SIM too |
| Device status, appointments, chores, safe places, profile settings (birthday, reading level, Komy, encyclopedia and game approvals – not the name) | your family, via Google Firebase | when the phones sync |
| Walkie-talkie and SOS voice messages that the child records itself | your paired parent phones, sealed with the family key | only on a tap; deleted after listening |
| Komy time: minutes today, budget, whether the time is up | your family, via Google Firebase | only if set; each report overwrites the previous one |
| Reading time: one word for today (open, started, done) | your family, via Google Firebase | only if set; each report overwrites the previous one |
| Weather request | weather service, with the place you chose | when refreshing |
| Memory book, Magic Sky and game progress, as an encrypted backup | only your parent phone, no cloud | regularly over Bluetooth, when both phones are in the same room |
| Voice while Komy listens, what is looked up in the encyclopedia | nobody – stays on the phone | never |
If the child’s phone is lost, Komy’s memory stays in the encrypted backup on the parent phone – no cloud, no detour; restoring it onto a new KOMY Phone is something we are still building. We do not store a location history: there is only the last position; safe-place and SOS alerts are deleted after 30 days. Not a throw-away device. It grows along.
At some point every child outgrows Komy. Then you don’t buy a second phone: you release the KOMY Phone, and the child’s phone becomes a perfectly normal smartphone. The device belongs to you, not to us.
- 1Today: the KOMY Phone
An Android phone that shows only Komy’s world. No browser, no store, nothing to filter.
- 2Later: you release it
In the parents’ app, on the KOMY Phone’s page under “Sicherheit” (safety) → “Gerät freigeben” (release device), confirmed by typing the word FREIGEBEN. You decide that, not us and not the child.
- 3After that: a normal Android phone
All apps, normal home screen, no locks. Samsung promises six Android upgrades and six years of security updates for the Galaxy A17 5G, Blackview at least six years of software updates for the Wave 7C. The release has not yet been tested on the Wave 7C.
On release, what your child did with Komy is deleted from the phone; the encrypted backup on your parent phone stays. You cancel the KOMY service separately via “Cancel contracts here”. The step cannot be undone on the phone. The release is part of every KOMY Phone we deliver.
A friend who needs your help.
Most learning apps ask questions they already know the answer to. Komy doesn’t.
Komy wonders, gets stuck, has forgotten something – and asks your child for help. With exactly what your child is learning right now. If your child gets stuck, Komy never gives the solution first. He helps step by step – a small hint, then a letter or a digit – and only at the very end does he show it, to copy down. A child who explains something to a friend feels strong. A child who is quizzed feels tested. That is the whole difference – and the KOMY Phone is built on it.
And when your child calls him, the two have a chat: Komy asks, your child taps a picture or says the answer, and Komy replies to exactly that. If your child calls him from the middle of a game, it turns around: with “Erklär’s mir” (explain it to me) your child explains, and Komy listens and asks questions.
There are two Komys. Your child picks one – and from then on the two are friends. Komy speaks with his own voice, even without the internet. The voice is synthetic; what Komy says was written and checked beforehand.

Does Komy speak English?
No – Komy speaks German, and so do the stories, the encyclopedia, the learning games and the parents’ app. The KOMY Phone is made for children who go to school in Germany or Austria and live their day in German. Contract language, terms and support are German as well; we are happy to answer e-mails in English.
What age is the KOMY Phone meant for?
The KOMY Phone is meant for children aged about 5 to 12. The morning routine, the timetable, the learning games and Komy’s stories are tailored to these years; younger siblings like to listen in, older children usually want more phone than the KOMY Phone allows.
Can my child make phone calls with it, and to whom?
No, the KOMY Phone does not make calls. There is no messenger either. From the parents’ app you send short messages such as “Come home” or “I’m on my way”; Komy tells your child, and you see that they have arrived. “Where are you?” quietly fetches the location; your child hears nothing of it. There is also Sprechfunk, like a walkie-talkie: hold a button, speak, let go, then it is the other person’s turn. Sealed with your family’s key, deleted after listening, no history. Only your parents’ phones can ring; your child cannot call anyone. After an SOS, too, your child can send one short voice message, and you can answer once – 15 seconds at most each, deleted after listening. Strangers cannot reach the child.
Does WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok or an app store work?
No. There is no browser, no app store, no WhatsApp, YouTube or TikTok, no advertising and no purchases – and this cannot be bypassed by restarting or through the settings. Anyone who resets the phone with the button combination erases everything on it. That is intentional: a children’s phone should keep a child reachable and bring a friend along, not open the door to the whole internet.
Can my child look things up?
Yes – the KOMY Phone holds a whole children’s encyclopedia that works without the internet: 5,107 articles in German from the Klexikon and the MiniKlexikon, in twelve fields of knowledge, with a search that forgives typos. It is not a chatbot that makes up answers but a checked encyclopedia edited by adults; beginning readers get the simpler MiniKlexikon texts once you switch the encyclopedia on for them. Sensitive topics – war and violence, death, body and sexuality, addiction, crime – stay invisible until you switch them on in the parents’ app, and what your child looks up is not recorded. Content from the Klexikon and MiniKlexikon of the Zentrale für Unterrichtsmedien (ZUM), licence CC BY-SA; the Klexikon is an independent project, Sysea is not affiliated with ZUM.
My child sees, hears or grips differently – can the KOMY Phone be adapted?
Yes. Under “So passt es mir” (“This suits me”) your child sets up the phone themselves: larger type, more contrast, colours that stay easy to tell apart with red-green colour blindness, reading along – everything Komy says then also appears as text –, vibration and flashing in addition to sound, and “less at once”. If wanted, the phone reads everything aloud. A hearing aid or a switch can be paired over Bluetooth; the parents approve that in their app.
What is Komy – and is it an AI that listens in on my child?
Komy is a companion, not a chatbot: no language model runs on the phone. Komy’s voice is synthetic; what Komy says was written in advance, checked by a human and stored on the phone as audio. What your child tells Komy is not recorded and not uploaded. Komy never gives the solution first, does not grade and does not quiz – he is the friend who needs your child’s help.
What does the KOMY Phone cost in total in the first year?
In the first year the KOMY Phone with data SIM costs €259 with the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G (€199 once for the phone plus €60 for one year of the KOMY service) or €219 with the Blackview Wave 7C (€159 plus €60); on the family rate with the Wave 7C it is €209 (€149 plus €60). Paid monthly it is €199 or €159 plus €5.99 a month. From the second year only €60 a year is due, or €49 with your own data SIM. Shipping to Germany and Austria is included.
Do I need a mobile contract? Can I use my own SIM?
No, you do not need a mobile contract. A data SIM is already in the device and included in the KOMY service; the service has no minimum term and can be cancelled monthly. If you prefer to use your own data SIM, the service costs €4.99 a month or €49 a year.
The KOMY Phone has no internet on the go – what now?
The included data SIM (1NCE) technically always runs as a roaming card, in Germany too. So “data roaming” must be switched on on the KOMY Phone – we do that before shipping, and with the data plan in the KOMY service it costs nothing. If it is ever off, the KOMY Phone has internet on Wi-Fi but not on the go. The parents’ app then shows “Mobile Daten unterwegs: aus” (mobile data on the go: off) with the steps on the KOMY Phone’s page as soon as the phone is on Wi-Fi. On the KOMY Phone: tap the clock six times → your Komy code → Einstellungen (settings) → at the very bottom “Geräteverwaltung (Eltern)” → “Mobilfunk / SIM” → switch roaming on and confirm “Daten-Roaming zulassen?” with OK. With your own SIM: a German SIM usually needs no roaming in Germany. For a trip abroad, enter the period in the timetable under “Ferien” (holidays) as “Im Ausland” (abroad) – otherwise the KOMY Phone blocks roaming for this SIM – and switch roaming on as above. What it costs depends on your tariff.
Which device is behind it?
You choose between two Android phones with the same KOMY software: the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G (SM-A176B/DS, 6.7-inch display, 5,000 mAh battery) for €199 and the Blackview Wave 7C (6.56-inch display, 5,000 mAh battery) for €159. The Samsung is sturdier (drop class B instead of C) and comes with six years of security updates promised by Samsung; the Blackview costs less. We set it up completely before shipping and lock it down so that only Komy’s world runs on it – unpack, pair with the parents’ app, done.
Galaxy A17 5G or Blackview Wave 7C – what is the difference?
Both run the same KOMY software with Komy, the encyclopedia, learning games, Sprechfunk and SOS. The differences, from the EU energy label and our tests: Samsung Galaxy A17 5G for €199 – drop class B, repairability class C, 1,200 charging cycles, almost 44 hours of battery life per charge, six Android upgrades and six years of security updates promised by Samsung, 5G. When your child outgrows it, you release it and it is a normal Android smartphone. Blackview Wave 7C for €159, €149 on the family rate – drop class C (a protective case is included), repairability class B, 800 charging cycles, almost 48 hours of battery life per charge, at least six years of software updates according to the manufacturer, 12 months manufacturer guarantee, 4G. The processor is simpler (Unisoc T310, 4 GB RAM); Komy runs smoothly on it in our test, and 4G is plenty for Komy’s world. To be honest: the Wave 7C is new for us. Pairing, Sprechfunk, knocking, SOS with a voice message and the parents’ messages we have tested on the device; the release to a normal Android phone not yet.
How do I set up the KOMY Phone?
In about 20 minutes and eleven steps: install the parents’ app, pair the phones by code, set the Komy code and the child code, Wi-Fi, name and reading level, safe places, timetable, alarm clock, first chores, the encyclopedia topics and the choice of games. Every step is shown with a screenshot in the user manual (German), which is also available as a PDF to print.
Does the KOMY Phone work if we parents have an iPhone?
Yes, with limitations: the parents’ app is currently available for Android only; all features are there. With an iPhone you set up the KOMY Phone directly on the device, in parent mode behind your Komy code – that works today. Location, messages, chores and the SOS alert currently only arrive on an Android phone or tablet, and the KOMY Phone can only be released from the parents’ app as well. A parents’ page in the browser is planned but not yet in the works; a dedicated iPhone app is planned, with no date yet.
What happens when my child outgrows the KOMY Phone?
You release the phone in the parents’ app: on the KOMY Phone’s page under “Sicherheit” (safety) → “Gerät freigeben” (release device), confirmed by typing the word FREIGEBEN. For now this only works with the parents’ app, so with an Android device. After that it is a perfectly normal Android phone: all apps, normal home screen, no locks – the device belongs to you, not to us. On release, what your child did with Komy is deleted from the phone; the backup on your parent phone stays, you cancel the KOMY service separately, and the step cannot be undone on the phone. Samsung promises six Android upgrades and six years of security updates for the Galaxy A17 5G; for the Blackview Wave 7C the manufacturer states at least six years of software updates in the EU product database EPREL. So far we only promise the release to a normal Android phone for the Galaxy A17 5G; it has not yet been tested on the Blackview Wave 7C.
How is it different from Google Family Link or a parental control app?
Family Link and parental control apps restrict a normal smartphone after the fact – browser, store and accounts remain and can be bypassed with time and patience. On the KOMY Phone there is nothing to filter: no browser, no store, no messengers and no account your child would have to create or maintain on the internet; you have nothing to manage. Instead it brings Komy, a friend who accompanies the day – and when your child outgrows it, you release the device and it becomes a normal smartphone.
What does the parents’ app see – and what does it deliberately not see?
The parents’ app shows you that your child is fine: the chore is done, reading time happened today, the child has arrived at school, the battery is full. It does not show what your child tells Komy, and no trail of the day – you see the current place and learn when a safe place is reached or left.
Where is the data stored? Where is the server?
What your child does with Komy – memory book, stories, game progress – is stored encrypted on the child’s phone; there is no cloud account for the child, and the only copy is an encrypted backup on your parent phone. What leaves the phone: the location (to your parents’ app, via Google Firebase in the EU region), by the same route the battery level, the status of chores, the “So passt es mir” settings and alerts to you (SOS, safe places, an almost empty battery); now and then a single word to our own server in Germany – a first name or a school subject that Komy does not know yet – so that it can be voiced once; the weather request with the place you chose and – only if you have set Komy time – how many minutes of it have been used today; if you have set a reading time, one word for today (open, started, done). Your child’s voice leaves the phone only in walkie-talkie and SOS messages that your child records itself: sealed with your family’s key, deleted after listening. Everything else Komy hears stays on the device. All services involved are named in the privacy policy of the KOMY service.
Can I set how long my child plays with Komy each day?
Yes, with Komy time. For each child you set how long they can play, work in My Notebook (Mein Heft) and call Komy each day – separately for school days and days off, each Off, 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes; both start out Off. Your child sees no clock and no number: Komy gives a friendly heads-up about five minutes before, and afterwards your child may still finish what they are doing. What never counts and always stays: SOS, the encyclopedia, My Plan, alarm clock, chores, routines, knocking, walkie-talkie, reading aloud to Komy and Komy’s stories – and during school time nothing counts at all. During homework time set with “Erst erledigen”, My Notebook does not count either. In the parents’ app you see how many minutes have been used today and can add more on the spot with “+15 min today” or “+30 min today”. Komy time is never a reward or a punishment and does not depend on stars or chores.
Does the KOMY Phone help with reading?
It invites reading – we promise nothing more. Your child reads to Komy from their own book (“Komy vorlesen”), and Komy listens. With reading time you set a fixed time per child each day, between 3 and 7 pm, 10 to 25 minutes; then Komy invites once: “Es ist Lesezeit. Liest du mir aus deinem Buch vor?” – never during lessons, not at night, never as a reproach. In “Komy erzählt” the text runs along and the sentence Komy is speaking is highlighted in yellow, so your child can read along. Nothing listens for this, and nothing goes online. You only see one word for today: started or done – no minutes, no titles, no mistakes. Reading aloud and Komy’s stories never count towards Komy time. Many primary schools have a “Leseband”, a fixed daily reading time in lessons. The KOMY Phone does not replace it; it complements it at home.
May the child take it to school?
That is what school mode is for: during lessons the phone goes quiet by itself – it shows only the clock, the current lesson and Komy, waiting; games and reading pause. Only the children’s encyclopedia, My Plan and the SOS button stay open. Whether a phone is allowed in the school bag is up to each school – best to ask briefly. For the conversation with the school there is a page and a printable sheet (in German): komyphone.de/schule.
What happens if the phone is lost?
You lock the phone from the parents’ app: it then shows only a neutral screen, Komy’s data is sealed. If it turns up again, you unlock it; if it does not come back, Komy’s memory stays backed up, encrypted, on your phone. Restoring it onto a new KOMY Phone is something we are still building.
Where do you deliver, and how long can I withdraw?
We deliver to Germany and Austria, shipping is included in the price. As a consumer you can withdraw from the order within 14 days of receipt without giving reasons; the phone goes back, you get the purchase price refunded.
What happens after cancelling the KOMY service?
The KOMY service ends at the end of the current billing period, the phone remains your property. Without the service, the data SIM, the parents’ messages, safe places and updates end; what works offline – Komy’s voice, the stories, the learning games, the morning routine – stays on the phone. You can cancel at any time via the cancellation button on this site.
